The Dental Implant Process, Step by Step

- Consultation and 3D scan. Your dentist examines your mouth and takes a cone beam CT (CBCT) scan, a 3D X-ray that shows the height and width of your jawbone and nearby nerves and sinuses. This is how the implant is planned.
- Extraction or bone graft, if needed. If the damaged tooth is still there, it is removed. If the bone is too thin, a bone graft adds material that your body slowly turns into solid bone. Some grafts are done at the same visit as the implant, and some need to heal first.
- Implant placement. The area is numbed. The dentist makes a small opening in the gum and places the implant post in the bone. Many people are surprised by how quick this part is.
- Healing (osseointegration). Over roughly three to six months, the bone grows tightly around the implant. This bond, called osseointegration, is what makes the implant strong. You may wear a temporary tooth during this time.
- Abutment. Once the implant has bonded, the abutment is attached. Sometimes it is placed at the same time as the implant.
- Crown. A custom crown is made to match your other teeth and attached to the abutment. Your bite is checked and adjusted so it feels natural.
Does Getting an Implant Hurt?
During the procedure, local anesthetic (numbing medicine) keeps the area comfortable. You will feel pressure and hear some sounds, but you should not feel sharp pain. Recovery and Aftercare

- Eat soft foods such as yogurt, eggs, soup and mashed potatoes for the first several days. Chew on the other side.
- Do not smoke, and avoid drinking through a straw for the first few days. Both can slow healing.
- Brush your other teeth as normal. Keep the implant area clean as your dentist directs, often with gentle salt water rinses.
- Keep every follow-up visit so your dentist can check healing.
Once your crown is in place, care for the implant like a natural tooth. Brush twice a day, clean between teeth daily, and keep up with regular exams and cleanings. Gum infection around an implant is the main thing that can cause problems later, so daily cleaning matters.
How Successful Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants have a strong track record. Long-term studies commonly report success rates of about 95% or higher for healthy patients, though results vary from person to person. With good care, the implant post can last for decades, often a lifetime. The crown may need replacing someday from normal wear.
